Student Code of Conduct
The Code of Conduct applies while at school, at a school-related activity, or in other circumstances where engaging in the activity will have impact on the school environment. Guidelines for appropriate student behaviour reflect the school's philosophy of care and respect, positive relationships, and a strong sense of belonging. Conduct guidelines focus on the expectation that students will take personal responsibility for their behaviour. This responsibility applies not only to academic studies, but also to the treatment of other people and the use and care of school facilities, equipment, textbooks, and supplies.
Expected behaviour is described, co-created for each classroom, taught and reviewed at the beginning of every school year. Students who make unexpected choices which infringe on a student's right will have an opportunity to review the acceptable behaviour and our school wide expectations. Students are expected to be honest to themselves and others. Openness and honesty promotes positive relations with others. Dishonesty has a negative effect on a student's reputation and the reputation of the school. It also infringes on a student's right to be respected.
If students fail to exhibit their best behaviour in theses areas, a sequential, consistent, and fair discipline process will be put into effect. Consequences applied for inappropriate conduct will be communicated to parents/guardians. In addition to our school-based guidelines and expectations, students at Watson are expected to be aware that more serious violations of the code of Conduct will be dealt with in accordance with SD#23 discipline regulations (Policy reg. 5600). The school promotes values expressed in the BC Human Rights Code respecting the rights of all individuals in accordance with the law – prohibiting discrimination based on race, colour, ancestry, place of origin, religion, marital status, family status, physical or mental disability, sex or sexual orientation - in respect of discriminatory publications and the discrimination in accommodation services and facility in the school environment.
Intervention Practices
When students are reported for contravening the Code of Conduct, the situation will be dealt with in the following manner. Action plans for remediation and/or restitution (consequences) will be put into place at all levels.
Serious violations that contravene the school and district Codes of Conduct.. ie. Those that repeatedly occur, are dangerous to the safety of other students, teachers, and support staff, may cause health hazards, or may contribute criminal acts, could lead to the following consequences:
- Definite Suspension (1 – 10 days) in-school or at home
- Indefinite Suspension (in excess of 10 days) At home with no return to school until heard by the School District Discipline Committee
Please note: School District #23 Discipline Regulations requires that the Principal must use discretion in determining the seriousness of the situation and that the issuing of appropriate consequences may include, or be precluded by, counsellor intervention. Special considerations may apply to students with special needs. If they are unable to comply with a Code of Conduct due to having a disability of an intellectual, physical, sensory, emotional or behavioural nature.
Responsible Student Use of Personal Technology Devices, School Technology, and District Networks
Student use of personal digital devices (any device used to communicate and/or access the internet), school technology, and district networks at school is for educational purposes.
Students must abide by the school’s Code of Conduct and procedures, as well as Central Okanagan Public Schools Policy 486: Student Use of Network Services and Digital Technologies.
Students will:
- Secure, power off and store personal digital devices during instructional (i.e. class time) and non-instructional time (i.e. breaks/lunch) at Elementary schools unless instructed by the Principal or school staff;
- Use personal digital devices during instructional time for instructional purposes and digital literacy skills as instructed by the Principal or school staff;
- Ensure personal digital devices are not used in areas where privacy is expected, such as restrooms and change rooms;
- Be permitted to use personal digital devices to support accessibility, accommodations, medical and health needs;
- Always take precautions to ensure online safety, privacy, and security;
- Treat others with respect and kindness when using digital devices and district network services;
- Always use digital devices and district network services responsibly and with academic integrity.
Schools will ensure that all students have equitable and developmentally appropriate access to technology to meet curricular requirements. Students are not required to have their own personal digital device or cellphone at school.
The use of personal digital devices, school technology, and district networks is a privilege. Staff may revoke a student’s access to devices because of inappropriate student conduct.
Violations of the school code of conduct could result in appropriate restorative processes or disciplinary actions including suspension and police intervention.
Dress Code:
Watson Road with the Watson Road Parent Advisory Council, considers the classroom as a "place of business". Appropriate will be defined here as right and correct for the school setting and functions, conducive to learning, not distracting from or disruptive to the learning process, intimidating to others, make any other student or adult in the building uncomfortable, Students are expected to refrain from dress styles which promote, imitate or celebrate violence, intimidation, racism, sexism, hatred towards others, gang association, sex, or alcohol/drug use. Clothes should not display language which is sexual, explicit, defamatory or offensive to any members of the school community. In addition, footwear must be worn at all times for health and safety reasons.
Students or visitors to Watson Road who do not meet the dress code will be respectfully required to change into appropriate attire or asked to leave the property.
