About Our School
Watson Road Elementary

Watson Road Elementary has a population of 630 students with 26 classes.    The school has a strong focus on meeting the needs of every student.  We have a well-established “Model of Support” based on the “Response to Intervention Model.”  This ensures that support is timely and appropriate to meet the needs of the child.  Overall, students in our school perform at a high level academically, based on numerous measures that are tracked on an ongoing basis through our School Improvement Plan.  Additionally, our school has an active Parent Advisory Council that supports the school in numerous ways.  They support field studies (trips) by paying for bus costs, purchase additional resources to support the school such as student agendas, coordinate the hot lunch program, put on movie nights and dances, as well as a yearly fun fair to name a few initiatives.  The PAC meets monthly and encourages all parents to attend.  The teachers and staff are committed to providing students with numerous exciting learning opportunities.  They coordinate a variety of field studies (trips), invite guest speakers into the school, and put on a variety of activities throughout the year to support physical fitness.  The school, led by our social justice team,  also engages in a number of charitable events throughout the year in order to give back to the community.

THE HISTORY OF WATSON ROAD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Our school was opened in the year 2000. At first, we had only nine classes, all of whom had been a part of North Glenmore Elementary School. The next year, children were transferred here from Springvalley Elementary, and Glenmore Elementary, and the school began to grow. Watson Road Elementary was named from the pioneer family whose farmhouse is at the top of the hill near the school. The Watson family is still nearby, and several members of the family attended the school’s open house. We have had some members of the Watson family as pupils in the school.

Before the school was built, the southern end of the playing field, where the school is now, was a duckpond. The school is built with a special “floating slab” foundation suitable for wetlands.

The original nine teachers from North Glenmore are called the Founders and Creators of the school. They wrote the mission statement and set the school rules and tried to create a school that was perfect for our community. The Founders and Creators chose the red winged blackbird as a symbol of the school.  You can see red winged blackbirds in the bulrushes near the school every spring and summer, as well as, our beautifully painted images of them on our gym wall.
